God, Love and Silence

I've sat down so many times in the past weeks and thought, "I'd love to write in my blog, but..." I don't have a lot of thoughts this morning, but wanted to post the lyrics to two songs that have blessed and encouraged me this week. They're both by Avalon - not the type of music I usually listen to, but I heard one of them on the radio a couple weeks ago as we were driving, flipping stations, and went searching for more of their music. So here are my two current favorites (they're not nearly as good without the music, but still worth posting, I think):

"Adonai"

One single drop of rain
Your salty tear became blue ocean
One tiny grain of sand turning in your hand
A world in motion
You're out beyond the furthest Morning Star
Close enough to hold me in Your arms

Chorus:
Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

One timid faithful knock
Resounds upon the Rock of Ages
One trembling heart and soul
Becomes a servant bold and courageous
You call across the mountains and the seas
I answer from the deepest part of me

Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

From age to age you reign in Majesty
And today You're making miracles in me

Adonai, I lift up my heart and I cry
My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
Oh, my Adonai

"Testify to Love"

For as long as I shall live,
I will testify to love.
I'll be a witness in the silences
Where words are not enough.
With every breath I take,
I will give thanks to God above.
For as long as I shall live,
I will testify to love.

This is just the chorus. The verses are good too, but what really struck me here are the third and fourth lines. We've talked about suffering in several of my classes this year, and as I've thought about how to reflect God's love to those who are suffering, it seems to me one of the best (and oftentimes one of the only) ways to do so is simply to be present in their deep silence. God does not promise to alleviate all our suffering, but He does promise to be with us no matter what happens. We can witness His love to others simply by being present in their silences for which no words are sufficient.
